1- Saturday, January, 16th Sharon Floyd 2-5pm $45
Yoga for Quitting Smoking with Sharon Floyd Is quitting smoking cigarettes one of your goals for 2010? Come celebrate your decision and enjoy the support of like-minded. Together, we will focus on rediscovering the breath through pranayama (yogic breathing) and explore the senses of smell and taste using aromatherapy and yummy treats! We will also review ways to increase body awareness through meditation and yoga poses. Introduction to some of the psychological methods of behavior modification will be presented along with ideas for identifying thought patterns that contribute to the smoking habit and an exploration of the subtle anatomy or energy centers). Equip yourself with the confidence to quit and find delight in discovery. No prior yoga experience is necessary; just the willingness to learn how to quit smoking.

2- Sat., Jan. 23rdth, Intro to Yoga with Elizabeth Jarrell 4:00-6:00pm, $30
Beginning a new yoga practice can be intimidating. There is so much to learn. The poses have funny names, it probably feels impossible to imagine doing some of those crazy balances and stretches you've seen on TV or in magazines, and what is yoga anyway?!? This workshop is designed for beginners who are interested in an in-depth but light hearted learning experience that will provide a strong foundation for starting a yoga practice. No prior experience is necessary. The workshop will include instruction, discussion, and plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions in a supportive and non-competitive environment. We will focus on basic rules of alignment as well as specific positioning for several fundamental poses, or asana that will help you to build strength and flexibility. We will spend time discussing the history and philosophy of yoga, practicing different breathing techniques and learning to link breath with movement. You will learn to flow through the Sun Salutations that are an integral component of most yoga classes. The workshop will be a lot of fun and when we're done you will feel prepared to start your own yoga practice at home or to be a confident student in basic yoga and flow yoga classes.

4- Sat. Feb 20th Essential of Kundalini with Melissa DeOrazio 2:00-5:00PM
Essentials of Kundalini Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) combines breath, mantra, and meditation into sets, called kriyas, addressing the mind, body, and spirit holistically. Yogi Bhajan taught that, through the practice of Kundalini Yoga and meditation, your glandular and nervous systems are stimulated, and your capacity for creative potential is heightened. You gain inner vitality to compensate for the adverse effects of stress so you can excel in life. In this workshop, we'll cover the basics of pranayama (breath work), mantras, and chakras, as well as the practice of kriyas (yoga sets) and meditations, to bring awareness and consciousness, not only to our yoga practice, but to our lives. We'll also discuss elements of yogic philosophy, lifestyle, and diet, and how to integrate the practice into our daily routine. This class is suitable for all levels of experience. A light meal is recommended before class. Yogi Tea and dessert will be served after class.

5- Amanda Anderson Feb. 27th 2:00-5:30PM
The body is a storehouse of your past emotional experiences. Through practicing certain yoga poses, you can clean these experiences from the body, lightening the heart and clarifying the mind. Your energy can then move more freely, carrying you forward into the life you want. Join us as we release unwanted emotions through practicing yoga. We will be doing affirmations, visualization techniques, breath work, and journaling in a safe, supportive environment. This workshop is open to all levels of yoga experience. Bring a journal and a yoga mat if you have one.

6 & 7 Jivamukti Basics March 13th & March 20th
Emphasis Standing postures and Forward bending

First session: Saturday, March 13th, 2:00pm-4:30pm
Standing postures Standing poses reflect back to us something about out willingness or unwillingness to connect to the earth, to all beings and nature. They speak to the clarity of our relationships with others. We can build a steady joyful connection through the physical connection with the ground on which we stand. In this segment we will refine various basic standing postures. Forward bending Nurturing, reflective forward bending is one of the most ingrained forms we take. These postures have the power to strengthen the digestive system and massage the internal organs as well as activate the adrenal glands balancing the whole system and promoting harmony.

Second session ( Jivamukti): Saturday, March 20th, 2:00pm-4:30pm
Emphasis Backbending Turning it upside down and putting it all together Backbending To open up in a backbend is to affirm your sovereignty and ability to move forward courageously with an open heart. We will explore various alignment techniques which help to open into backbends with a sense of ease and liberation. Turning it upside down and putting it all together Here we begin to integrate the breath, mind and body as interrelated parts of the real whole self. The power of the sound of our own voice to bring us into awareness and unite the subtle body with the gross body will be part of our practice, asana will be linked to the breath and inversions and bandhas will be introduced. This class will end with a brief meditation practice.

Saturday, March 27th , 3:00-4:00PM Kid's Camp with Elizabethh Jarrell and Nathalie Croix
This is Yoga camp for the little ones. Just as the adults, children today also have a lot of stress; homework, over-scheduling; it all adds up. Yoga is an amazing way to relieve stress, develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. Children can carry these skills beyond class and into their daily routines. Yoga has also been shown to help the hyperactive and attention-deficit child. Yoga helps channel these impulses in a positive way. Yoga camp will be about exploring yoga postures, getting beyond just "doing" the posture, by becoming like the postures -- strong and confident like a warrior. Foremost we will play and have FUN :)

Saturday, May 8th, 2:00-4:00pm Daria Korokhtenkova
What is Aromatherapy? Find out at the special workshop: Aromatherapy: Basics and its everyday usage. The Aromatherapy workshop will introduce you to the basics of Aromatherapy. You will learn how to use essential oils and how to incorporate other methods of Aromatherapy in your everyday life.

Melanie Fawer Nathalie Croix Stuart LeBlanc

MELANIE FAWER
Co-owner of LIFE YOGA, Melanie formerly operated The Yoga Room in New Orleans from 2002-2008. Traditionally trained in classical Ashtanga yoga in Mysore, India, by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, she has made ten trips there since ’94 and was certified in ’01. She is one of only 12 women certified by Jois worldwide. Melanie introduced Ashtanga to New Orleans and produced a DVD, “Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga – Primary Series.”

Melanie taught Ashtanga at Jivamukti Yoga Studio in New York City from ’99-‘00. While finishing college in New York in ‘91, Melanie studied directly with David Life and Sharon Gannon, the founders of Jivamukti, which is inspired by Ashtanga and Sivananda yoga. It was David whom recommended Melanie to study with Jois in India and later invited her to teach at their studio.

Melanie worked at the original Yoga Works in Santa Monica, CA in ’96 with its founder Maty Ezraty, whom introduced her to Iyengar yoga, and Chuck Miller. Melanie met both in Mysore in’94 and invited her to work at their studio. Also in ‘96, Melanie took Maty’s teacher training course.

Melanie has practiced for 20 years and watched yoga grow from a personal passion to a national and international phenomenon. She has watched New Orleans grow from a city with one or two pioneering yoga teachers to a city with at least ten yoga studios. Melanie is proud to call New Orleans home and to be part of its evolving yoga community. A graduate of New York University, Melanie majored in psychology.

NATHALIE CROIX
Director of LIFE YOGA, Nathalie returns to New Orleans from Santa Monica, CA. where she has been a yoga teacher and yoga advisor at Yoga Works since ‘06 and a Professor of Kinesiology and Yoga at Santa Monica College since ‘05. Nathalie moved to the United States in ‘99 on a scholarship from Southeastern University of Louisiana and traveled with their dance company, DanceWorks for five years. In that time, her focus shifted from the performing arts to the healing arts as she fell in love with yoga. Her first teacher certification was with Ganga White of the White Lotus Foundation in ‘02 and in ’03, she was certified with Becky Gelatt of The Yoga School in Covington, LA.

Nathalie and Melanie met at The Yoga School in ’98 and a lasting teacher/student relationship and later friendship has grown into LIFE YOGA! Nathalie apprenticed and taught at The Yoga Room from ’02-‘04 and has made three trips to India since ‘03 to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

Nathalie looks for the natural potential of her students. She believes that each student should practice at their own pace and respects the individuality of each student.

A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, Nathalie majored in kinesiology and journalism with a specialization in modern dance. She is fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese and English.
